Florida Keys Conch Style: The Key to a Fashionable Wardrobe

Posted on: July 27th, 2012 by Leah No Comments

In the Florida Keys, it can be difficult to be stylish.  The heat and high humidity are not complimentary to getting dressed up. And our testosterone- infused pastimes don’t exactly inspire creativity in fashion.  It isn’t out of the ordinary to spend an afternoon at a community event, take a boat ride to enjoy the sunset and then end up at a restaurant for dinner and drinks.

The secret to a fashionable Keys wardrobe is versatility, owning great basics, buying colorful on-trend accessories and finding comfortable, yet stylish shoes.

Living an active lifestyle means being ready for anything so your Florida Keys wardrobe needs to have versatility.  Not only do we want to look stylish, but we also need to be able to get in and out of a boat without a problem.

Look for pieces that can be dressed up or down – taking you from the boat as a bathing suit cover-up, out to dinner with friends.

Investing in great basics is the foundation to any stylish wardrobe.  Look for pieces that fit and flatter your body.  Wardrobe basics should include fitted shorts, a few colorful fitted shirts, a long maxi dress, two to three colorful jersey dresses, a fitted jacket in a neutral color (such as tan, black or navy), a nice black dress and a great pair of jeans.

Next, add colorful, on-trend accessories such as scarves, jewelry and bags.   This season’s hottest fashion trends include:

  • Embrace neon.  Neon and bright colored pieces such as pink, orange, and yellow are in this season.  Don’t be afraid of color: wear a pink dress with a bright yellow scarf.  When shopping, look for bright colored accessories to add to the great basics you already own.
  • Color-block your look.  Create this by pairing two complementary colors such as yellow and purple or blue and orange.  You can do this by adding a jacket or handbag to your outfit in a color on the opposite side of the color wheel, or be bold and wear a red top with a yellow skirt.
  • Wear contrasting patterns together.  As long as the base color of the two patterns is the same, go for it.  Think long navy striped maxi dress paired with a navy floral scarf.
  • Pair colorful accessories such as a bright bag, statement necklaces and sandals with neutral shorts and top or a black dress.

In addition, here in the Keys comfortable shoes are a must.  Try wedges for a more dressed-up look and lots of bright colored sandals and flip-flips.  Look for a few neutral-colored shoes and then buy lots of color as shoes are a great way to add color to your outfit!

The Power of Pink

Posted on: July 9th, 2012 by Leah No Comments

I haven’t seen this much pink lipstick since the 80’s when the only way to wear it was with crimped hair and blue eye shadow.  Today’s pink lipstick ranges from soft matted pinks to bright fuschia and are being worn by everyone from Kim Kardashian to Rihanna.   This uber girly shade is the perfect color this season and instantly can brighten  up your summer look.

Although my go-to shade will always and forever be red, it’s been my experience that a strong lip color in any shade can add an air of confidence similar to how we ladies feel in stilettos.  Pink is the perfect hue this season for a lighter, less dramatic look and perfectly transcends from the office to happy hour.

When trying out a new lip color I prefer to start with the less expensive brands to see if I’ll wear it.  At a recent trip to CVS, I picked up this L’Oreal Paris Infallible 8 HR Le Gloss in pink topaz for under $10.  Although it claims to be an 8-hour gloss, I think the only way it could possibly stay on for 8 hours is if you didn’t eat or drink anything during that time.  That said, I still love a good gloss and this one goes on beautifully, stays on for quite awhile and the color is amazing.

My next stop is the Giorgio Armani counter at Saks for a hot pink long-wear lip stain!

It looks even more pink in person!
