Designer Swim Wear

Posted on: July 26th, 2013 by Leah No Comments

This past week Miami Beach strutted their stuff for the esteemed Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim. In the fashion world, the most notable fashion week’s occur in Paris, Milan, New York and Berlin and feature fashion icons such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Versace, Giorgio Armani and Valentino. But for the swimwear industry, it’s all about Miami. The global swimwear and beachwear market is a $16.5 Billion industry and much of that starts in Miami. The highly anticipated Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim is an opportunity for designers to debut their new swim and resort collections for the 2014 season to buyers and media to take a look at the latest trends. This event also offers a trade show that many of our local Florida Keys boutiques attend to purchase swimsuits and beach wear for Spring 2014.

The sweltering fashion shows took place at the Raleigh Hotel in pop-up luxe tents set up around their pool and beach to make room for each show. Designers presenting their 2014 collections included: Dolores Cortes, Beach Bunny, Nicolita, Mara Hoffman, Nanette Lepore, and BCBGeneration to name a few.

One of my favorite events was the Betsy Johnson party hosted on the rooftop of the Betsy Hotel. Betsey Johnson has long been a favorite designer of mine. Known for her spunky and flirty designs, her colorful 2014 swimwear collection was Betsey-licious! The models each had bright fluorescent wigs on and were dancing to the music making it more of a party then a fashion show and Betsey made her debut wearing bright red lipstick and a black tutu. The new 2014 swim line was full of lots ruffles, bows, peplums, embellishments, and sheer mesh inserts, on par with her fun, forever young design aesthetic.

There are several trends in swimwear to look for in 2014.

Retro – high waist bottoms combined with bustier tops are still a big trend in swimwear. This glamorous 50’s trend has taken on a modern feel with bright patterns and colors.

Cut-outs – Many of the designers had sophisticated one-pieces with cutouts throughout the torso. These sophisticated suits are a piece of art all on their own. Look for cutouts that accentuate your best features.

Bold and colorful patterns – Kaleidoscope is a new pattern for swimwear in 2014. The pattern reflects a lot of bright colors and geometric shapes for a bold and beautiful design. In addition, blue and orange are popular colors for 2014.

Stripes and Polka Dots – These beauties aren’t going away any time soon. Update a striped or polka dot suit by wearing it with a bold colored separate such as a black and white polka dot top paired with bright orange bottom for a completely new look.

For Florida Keys gals, there’s a new way to get a designer suit. We’ve all bought a basic suit because it fit well but wished it had a little more to it. Local, Pascale Schlegel works with her clients to transform those well fitting suits into custom creations, adding embellishments such as lace, beading, ribbon and crystals to create a suit just for you. She works with each of her customers to create something individual to them and their style but also has several of her signature styles displayed on her website. Go to Jawableu.com to see Pascale’s unique designs and order a custom suit of your own. In addition, she has several custom suits available for sale at Moonlight Boutique at 87745 Overseas Highway, Islamorada.

Summer Wardrobe Essentials

Posted on: July 16th, 2013 by Leah No Comments

June 21 marked the first official day of summer. And although in the Keys, we’re already into the full swing of our summer season, there are several wardrobe essentials that you should consider adding to your closet. In late July, many stores will start marking summer items down to make room for their fall line so start watching those sales racks for these must have summer staples.

Chic Cover-ups – A gorgeous cover-up is a-must in every fashionistas wardrobe.  Look for cover-ups that can take you from boat mate to lunch date without much effort.  I especially love colorful lightweight breathable fabrics to keep you cool on a hot day.

Echo Design Caftan

This beautiful caftan made by Echo Design is an easy, relaxed fit that covers and flatters with effortless appeal. $48 Miss Monroe Boutique 88511 Overseas Highway, Tavernier 305-735-4374 shopmissmonroe.com

Light-Weight Colored Jeans – the colored denim trend is not going out anytime soon so pick a few in light-weight fabrics that you can wear through the cooler months.  I prefer the skinny styles in bright hues that I can pair a blazer and ballet flats for day or a cute top and heels for night.

Bright Statement Necklaces – Summer fashions tend to have a lot of statement necklaces in beautiful bright colors.  If you don’t already own a few, consider investing in one.  If you wear a lot of blue, then try finding one in red or turquoise to add another color to your ensemble.  Many current styles have several colors combined.  Wear a multi-colored statement necklace with neutrals or pair it with an outfit in one of those colors.

Lazy Day Sun Hats – A wide-brimmed hat is another must in the Keys.  Not only do they provide great sun protection for your face and upper body but they ooze fabulous.  Pair one with big shades, a cute bikini and a bold lip and you’ll instantly transform your look.

This wide brim, two-tone black and white Scala hat oozes fabulous while perfectly shading your face and body while relaxing poolside. $49 Lions Lair Boutique 82185 Overseas Highway, Islamorada 305-664-9922 lionslairdesigns.com

Playful Patterns – There are so many fun patterns out this year.  My faves are polka dots and the always stylish nautical stripes.  Find a cute patterned pair of shorts or long sleeve top that you can wear into Fall and Winter by layering other pieces with it.  For example, add a long sleeve top, loosely tied scarf and ballet flats with a patterned skirt for the cooler months ahead.

Light-Weight Summer Sweater – I love light-weight sweaters as they’re so versatile for our Florida Keys weather.  Wear it on a cooler night for extra coverage during  the summer months and then pair it with bright colored skinny jeans and a blazer in the winter months.

Sandals – This is a great time of year to go through your sandals to see which ones need to be tossed and replaced.  If the soles are worn out or they’ve gotten stinky (it happens) it’s time to replace them.  Make sure that whatever you buy is comfortable and will last for more than one season as in the Keys our sandals tend to get worn year round.

Peace of Tibet: Jewelry with Meaning

Posted on: July 4th, 2013 by Leah No Comments

Jewelry is easily one of my favorite fashion accessories.  A large statement necklace can make an outfit while other designs may signify important milestones and memories like the jewelry I received from my grandmother and the wedding ring from my husband.  Jewelry differs from clothing, shoes and handbags in that it has no real purpose other than to be appealing.  It doesn’t keep you warm, protect your feet or carry your belongings but merely is a form of artistic expression.

Although the techniques used in making jewelry have evolved in the more than 100,000 years since jewelry was first discovered, there are some things that have remained the same.  The first forms of jewelry were comprised of beaded necklaces made of shells strung together like charms not unlike many designs today.  Throughout human history, jewelry has been used to express wealth and social status as well as denote marital status, status within religion and social groups, and to celebrate milestones such as graduations, birthdays, and anniversaries.  Jewelry has also been made to adorn the body from head to toe with such as items as hair pins to toe rings.

When buying jewelry, make sure it reflects your personal style.  Look for unique pieces that offer great color and texture and can be worn with a variety of items in your wardrobe.  Buy what you like and mix and match bracelets and necklaces wearing more than one at a time.  The trick is to keep with a color tone to make it all come together.

My favorite jewelry is one-of-a-kind pieces like those made by Renzen Dekiy Rich in her Islamorada boutique and studio called Peace of Tibet.  Originally, from Amdo, Tibet, she has been making jewelry since she was young and had a similar store in Tibet but luckily for us, she found her way to the Florida Keys!

On any given day, you can walk into her store and find her working on a new piece.  Her handmade jewelry is made with beads purchased from trips to Tibet, India and Nepal.   Most of the beads have been blessed by Tibetan monks for peace and positive energy before they are made into one of her beautiful creations.
