Back to School

The start of the school year is always such a fun time of year.  Although it marks the end of summer, it also marks the start of a new chapter for our kids.  After weeks of preparing for the start of school with shopping trips for new clothes and school supplies, attending orientation, and meeting the teacher, our kids are finally ready for their first day of school.

My favorite moments are the first day of school pictures on social media.  Some kids are smiling, some kids are sulking, and some won’t even turn around for the picture (after all they are in high school now). But the best is the reaction of the parents to the start of the year.  Some moms shed tears as they reminisce about years gone by, some moms exhale a sigh of relief that they made it through a very long summer, and some moms celebrate with cocktails and pool parties now that they finally have the house all to themselves.

Whatever your reaction to the start of the school year, below are a few tips to get you feeling more like yourself:

Schedule Time for You

Finding time for you can be a challenge during an active and fun-filled summer, but now that the kids are back in their routines, it’s time to focus a little more attention on you.  Whether you schedule coffee dates with your girlfriends or attend a class at the gym, find time each week to rejuvenate.

Shop the Summer Sales

You’ve spent weeks shopping for your kids, now it’s time for a little retail therapy all for you.  August is the best time to buy summer apparel that most retailers are clearing out.  Since we wear summer clothing pretty much all year long, take advantage of the sales and shop for swimsuits, shorts, dresses, and sandals at a fraction of the cost.

Shop Fall Basics

Although our fall-like weather is still months away, many of the major retailers have just added fall apparel such as jeans, jackets, and boots to their merchandise.  Consider what trips you may be going on this winter that may “require” a new pair of boots.  Remember that we do have a few cold days in the Keys so your items certainly won’t go unworn.

Pamper You

Recharge with a massage or pedicure just for you.  Better yet, plan a spa day with your girlfriends to really relax and unwind.  Every mom (and parent) deserves to take a little time for themselves. Whether its reading a good book, going to the spa, or taking a bubble bath, make time to pamper you.

Swimwear for Every Woman

Miami Swim Week is always one of the hottest weeks of the year.  For one, it’s held in late July when your makeup literally runs down your face.  But add throngs of gorgeous swimwear models, hundreds of hot, hot, hot bikinis and hordes of journalists and industry peeps and Miami was smoldering.

Most of the steaminess happened on the runways with designers pulling out all the stops with swim and resort wear designs that showcased exciting new styles, retro cuts and beautiful tropical prints. But the show that really pushed the enveloped was the debut collection from Sports Illustrated held at the W South Beach.

SI Swimsuit partnered with RAJ Swim to create a new collection of swimwear and active apparel for ALL women.  Yes, you read that right.  Beginning in the spring of 2018, the body-positive swimwear collection will be available in sizes 2-20 and will range from $40-$160 per suit.  The line features seductive one-pieces in shiny finishes, retro high-cut briefs straight from the 90s, and athletic pieces that are both functional and sexy.

What really made this show so hot was the group of women chosen to model the collection.   SI Swim held an open casting call in May and selected 15 aspiring models of all shapes and sizes to demonstrate just how versatile this line will be. As each model strutted down the runway the audience responded with cheers and applause.

It’s rare to see the debut of a new swimwear collection with women this diverse on the runway.  Typically, you find size zero models donning barely-there bikinis with perfect bodies and not a hair out of place.  But this show was different.  It was inspiring to see beautiful women with “normal” bodies flaunt their figures.

SI Swim isn’t the first to embrace size inclusivity.  The body positivity movement has gained momentum online with bloggers and “plus” size models like Ashley Graham encouraging women to love their bodies at any size.  This past spring, couture fashion designer, Prabal Gurung, launched a new collection with Lane Bryant after being inspired by their body-diversity ads #ImNoAngel.

There’s no better time to put an end to the matronly swim dress usually reserved for curvy women. The next time you’re out on the water, rock a gorgeous suit that flaunts what you got and makes you love your body and all your curves.
