How to be the Best Dressed Wedding Guest

Posted on: May 29th, 2015 by Leah No Comments

The month of June, second only to August, is the most popular month for weddings. With all the different types of weddings it can be hard to know what to wear. For most weddings, the invitation will indicate the type of attire the couple would like their guests to don by listing the dress code. When a wedding invitation does not clearly indicate the dress code, you’ll need to create a look that is special, respectful, and appropriate for the venue and time of celebration.

An Evening Wedding

Weddings are a celebratory event and that means what you wear should reflect that. It is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. An evening wedding indicates a more formal affair and should be attended with semi-formal to formal attire unless otherwise noted.   That said, you never want to upstage the bride. This means no attention-getting styles showing too much leg or too much decolletage, no loud colors and absolutely no white. A cocktail dress is the perfect attire for an evening wedding paired with classic accessories such as heels, a clutch purse and jewelry. Stand out in a sea of LBDs by opting for a feminine print such as floral or charming color tones such as soft pink or mint green.

A Daytime Wedding

A daytime wedding calls for a more subdued look. Stay away from black dresses for early morning or afternoon weddings to ensure you don’t look like you are attending a funeral. Instead of black or bold colored heels which will look more appropriate for evening attire, opt for wedges, sandals or nude colored heels that will perfectly complement a day look. Similar to what you might wear to an outdoor wedding, a daytime wedding is perfect for sundresses and long maxi dresses. A long maxi dress worn with sandals will be celebratory while not being overdressed for the time of day.

An Outdoor Wedding

If it’s an outdoor wedding, your footwear will be the most important part of your outfit. Outdoor weddings held on a beach, or in a field will make heels more of a hazard than an accessory. Choose shoes that you can walk-in such as dressy sandals or wedge heels and stay away from flip flops as they are too noisy and casual. For men, loafers or leather sandals are appropriate unless a dress code of semi-formal or formal has been noted. You’ll also need to plan for the elements. Rain, bugs, and sun are all things to plan ahead for by packing the right items to make you comfortable such as an umbrella, bug spray and sunscreen. If it’s warm, you will also need to make sure your clothing is sweat resistant. Choose darker colored fabrics that are breathable and made from natural fibers such as 100 percent cotton or linen.

For the Bride

In early May, the Key West High School Fashion Club presented its eighth annual fashion show where ten talented students presented their designs. One high school fashionista, Kristin Ayala Crane, created her line inspired by bridal fashion week with the whimsical theme of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Her collection utilized lace, tulle, satin and strategic cutouts for accentuating the beauty of the female physique. In addition to white, gold was also used to complement her designs for an elegant look. Although these students are not yet selling their own creations, if you’re a bride to-be, they certainly are a group to watch as these talented students are sure to be tomorrow’s couture bridal fashion designers.

Whether you’re jet setting this summer or planning a staycation, having the right clothes for your getaway are as important as planning your activities once you arrive at your destination. Tropical Prints

Believe it or not, Hawaiian shirts and all things tropical are considered hip and on-trend. While enjoying their moment in the sun, these bold botanical prints are appearing in black and white fauna, vintage inspired palm tree prints, and bright tropical hues. It’s Derby Time!

Posted on: April 20th, 2015 by Leah No Comments

It’s time to dust off your fascinators, floppy hats and fedoras for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2.   The only way to watch the best two minutes in sports is to enjoy it with festive attire, mint juleps and friends. So it’s time to plan your most stylish outfit, create a hat, and decide where to watch it!

kentucky-derby

Plan Your Outfit

The Kentucky Derby takes on the style of a “Southern belle”. Sundresses in bright spring hues and fun patterns such as floral or stripes are perfect for this event. Before finalizing your dress, consider what your headpiece will look like. If your dress has a lot of pattern or color, you may want to choose a simple design for your hat. Likewise, if you choose a simple dress, you can opt for a big and bold fascinator!

For men, classic linen, khaki or seersucker suits are the perfect attire for the Kentucky Derby. If this feels too dressy for your viewing plans, opt for a more casual look with a button down shirt in a fun color or pattern such as pink or gingham. Keep in mind the preppier the better. Pair it with shorts, loafers, a bow tie and a fedora and you are all set.

DIY Kentucky Derby Hat

If the hats in your closet aren’t quite cutting it, get creative and make your own. You’ll need either a hat or a headband for your base, embellishments such as flowers, feathers, bows and ribbons, and a hot glue gun and safety pins to help you adhere your designs. Styles can range from classy and fashionable to zainy, eye-catching headwear.

Summer Fashion Essentials

Posted on: May 16th, 2014 by Leah No Comments

The forever summer weather in the Florida Keys likely have most tourists wondering what could possibly be different about our “summer” wardrobe. However, we locals understand that summer means even lighter-weight materials in sweat proof fabrics that will keep us cool for the hot months ahead. Here are several wardrobe essentials for you to add to your closet the sweltering season ahead.

Bright Clutch

Let your accessories make the statement this summer with a bright hued or patterned clutch. Add a clutch to a basic ensemble such as a black dress or shorts and t-shirt for a pop of color. Try switching up your normal go to handbag by swapping it for a clutch for day. It’s a amazing what a cute clutch will do to make you feel more confident about what you’re wearing. Waters Edge Gift Cottage at 95175 Overseas Highway in Key Largo has a great assortment of summer clutches priced at around $30.

Sunnies

In the Florida Keys, sunglasses are a fashion accessory that gets worn daily. It’s also an accessory that you can never have enough of. All that wear makes them easy to lose, scratch, and break. So if you find a pair of sunglasses you love, buy more than one pair. I love buying sunglasses in multiple styles and colors to match to my outfit of the day. Miss Monroe Boutique located at 81868 Overseas Highway in Islamorada at the Village Square at Trading Post shopping area has a great selection of sunglasses in a variety of shapes and colors and range from $18-$24. At that price you can afford to buy one of each!

Sandals

New sandals are a summer must have. I love updating my wardrobe with a fun new print, style or color.   D-Luxe Boutique carries a variety of styles in neon pink, white and black with gold accents and wedge sandals for dressier occasions. Summer is also a good time to review the sandals already in your closet. If they’re falling apart it may be time to replace them. Shop D-Luxe Boutique at 80925 Overseas Highway in Islamorada. Sandals start at $18 and everything in the store is under $50.

Bold Statement Jewelry

Most summer fashions tend to have simpler designs for easy wear in warmer weather. Shorts worn with tank tops and long solid colored maxi dresses need a statement necklace to create interest your ensemble. If you don’t already own a few, consider investing in one. If you wear a lot of blue, then try finding one in yellow or turquoise to add another color to your outfit. Terra Nova located at 712 Duval Street in Key West carries of line of jewelry called Nature Bijoux made out of natural components such as coral, leather and zebu horn. Ranging from $48-$325, this jewelry line is meant to start a conversations as when worn, everyone will be asking about your beautiful jewelry.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Posted on: May 7th, 2014 by Leah No Comments

It’s time to celebrate all the special mom’s in your life on Mother’s Day Sunday, May 11. Finding the perfect gift for the most important women in your life can be a difficult feat. It’s a gift that should portray your thanks, love and appreciation for all that they do. Show your mom, mother-in-law and wife how much you appreciate them on Mother’s Day with a thoughtful gift that will tell them just how important they are.

Here are some ideas to make your mother feel extra special on Mother’s Day.

Thoughtful Card

The simplest form of gratitude comes straight from the heart.   A handmade card with your child’s drawing on the front and a heartfelt message inside is easily the best card any mother could receive. And the only thing it will cost you is a little time. It’s the perfect card for Grandma and mom and the card will likely stay on the fridge for years to come.

Jewelry

You can never go wrong with pearls or diamonds. These are staples in a woman’s jewelry collection and if your wife or mother doesn’t currently own a tennis bracelet, diamond earrings or a beautiful set of pearls, then this would be a great gift to show your admiration. If diamonds or pearls are not in your budget, buy her some jewelry that is a little more fashion forward such as a statement necklace in a bright hue for summer.

Flowers

Flowers are a wonderful way to tell your mother how special she is. A bouquet of roses, tulips or lilies are perfect for Mother’s Day and the fragrant spring-like aroma will be sure to make her smile. You could also opt for a potted plant that will last longer than a week. Orchid arrangements are both easy to find in the Keys and ever so beautiful.

Experience

Take your mom on a trip, spend the day paddleboarding or kayaking, or book a spa day. Experiences are what create memories and I’m sure she’ll be incredibly appreciative just to spend time with you. The Wino bar in Key West at 430 Duval Street offers wine and Godiva chocolate pairings with the average glass price set at just $10. Depending on the wine you order, their wine master’s will suggest white, milk, dark or dark mint Godiva chocolate for an additional $3 to complement your wine. They are open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and also sell both Godiva chocolate and bottles of wine for a gift you can bring to your mom.

Brunch

If you are planning to celebrate Mother’s Day by going out to brunch on Sunday, be sure to make reservations. The Plaza Grill is offering a Mother’s Day brunch from 11-3 p.m. with a specialty menu featuring eggs benedict, prime rib and baked yellowtail snapper. Located at 5101 Overseas Hwy in Marathon, call 305.743.7874 for reservations. You could also consider beating the brunch crowd by celebrating with your mom early. Take her to dinner at her favorite restaurant to celebrate. If your mom doesn’t live nearby, send her a gift card so she can treat herself to her favorite eatery.

Where to shop

The Banyan Tree in Islamorada offers a great selection of gifts perfect for the mother’s in your life. Thishidden oasis includes an expertly curated boutique and tropical garden. Offering custom orchid arrangements and glass terrariums with beautiful air plants, as well as, clothing, house wares, and one of the largest selections of fashion jewelry in the Keys .   With an affordable price point, you will find something for everyone at this Islamorada treasure.

It’s Kentucky Derby Party Time!

Posted on: April 23rd, 2014 by Leah No Comments

The Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 3 and the only way to watch the best two minutes in sports is with friends while donning big hats and sipping mint Juleps.    So it’s time to plan your preppiest outfit, buy a big floppy hat, and decide where to watch it!

The first step is to plan what you’ll be wearing.  For the ladies, sundresses are the perfect attire.  Go for a bright spring color or try a fun pattern such as floral or stripes.   Next you need to coordinate your hat to your dress.  Choose a color that will contrast nicely with your dress or choose a neutral colored hat such as black or tan that you can add color to.  If you don’t already own a big floppy hat, you can purchase one at most local clothing boutiques.

Next you’ll need to purchase some hat accessories.  I recommend flowers, ribbon, rhinestones and feathers.  Some of this you may be able to find hiding around your house, if not, try your local arts and crafts store.   For the Kentucky Derby, more is better.  You want to look fashionable and yet a little ridiculous so go for big accessories that will coordinate to your dress.  Some fun color combinations could include teal/pink, navy/red, and purple/yellow.   If you are wearing a purple dress, buy a yellow hat and add a purple polka dot ribbon with a big purple flower.  To secure your hat accessories you’ll need some pins and a hot glue gun.  Once you’ve bedazzled your hat and coordinated your outfit, it’s time to make a plan for where you’ll be watching the race.

Islamorada

I’ll be hosting a Kentucky Derby party at oo-tray at 80900 Overseas Highway starting at 4 p.m.  oo-tray will be serving a special Kentucky Derby themed menu and prizes will be given out for the best dressed and best hat.  In addition, there will be a 50/50 raffle for betting on horses, live music after the race and an Islamorada Derby where local celebrities will race with horse sticks for guests’ amusement.  Call 305.922.2027 for more information or RSVP on Facebook here.

Marathon

Fisherman’s Hospital Foundation is hosting a Kentucky Derby fundraiser at Cabana Breezes at 401 East Ocean Drive starting at 3 p.m.  Tickets at $75 and all proceeds raised will benefit Fishermen’s Community Hospital.  Bet on your favorite derby horses and enjoy mint juleps and southern fare.  RSVP to kim.gregory@fhcares.com or call 517.214.6754 for tickets.

Key West

Aqua Nightclub at 711 Duval Street will be hosting a Kentucky Derby party from 5-8 p.m. with races and bourbon tasting.  Call 305.294.0555 for more information.

Grand Opening for Michelle Nicole Lowe Art Gallery

Posted on: January 24th, 2014 by Leah No Comments

Mark your calendar for Friday, January 31st for the Grand Opening and Re-Opening Party for the Michelle Nicole Lowe Art Gallery, Seaside Glassworks and Islamorada Mercantile located at mile marker 81.9 in Islamorada.  From 5 to 8 p.m., these three wonderful  stores will be opening their doors for the public to enjoy fabulous art, great shopping, tasty treats and libations in celebration of their new locations.

This is the first art gallery and studio space for Michelle Nicole Lowe, however, her stunning tropical paintings have long been a favorite for local art collectors and Florida Keys travelers wishing to take a piece of paradise home.  Previously her work was featured in Gallery Morada.  You may also have seen her paintings on display at the Green Turtle, Islamorada Fishing Club, Third Thursday Art Walks and national art shows around the United States.

Michelle Nicole Lowe Art Gallery featured by Leah Maki

The Michelle Nicole Lowe Art Gallery not only has her original and limited edition prints of her paintings but also great gift items with her artwork on them including: Tervis Tumblers, women’s tank tops, note cards, plates and platters, and cell phone cases.  Imagine your friends reaction when they see Michelle’s tropical fish on the cover of your phone!   In addition, you’ll also find gorgeous gemstone jewelry and one-of-a-kind oak, ash or walnut wood bangles made by artisans from around the country.  In addition, Michelle does commissioned work for those wanting a one-of-a-kind painting for their home.

Michelle’s neighbor is Seaside Glassworks, who’s expanded shop now includes a classroom for art classes.  Owner and artist, Stephanie Martin will start offering classes this spring for crafting jewelry and artwork all your own.   Within her gallery you’ll discover beautiful glass fused jewelry, drop light pendants, and wall art made from combining dichroic two-toned glass and artisan glasses.  My favorite are her one-of-a-kind pendants and earrings which have a metallic coating on its surface that reflect light and look great with everything.  As each unique piece reflects different colors depending on what you’re wearing.   This affordable, wearable art is a must for all jewelry lovers.

The final shop in this building is Islamorada Mercantile who’s new space offers an expanded selection of  resort wear for men and women.  Find easy-to-wear dresses and wardrobe staples in bright hues and patterns perfect for life in the Florida Keys.   In addition to clothing, they also offer jewelry, sun hats, gift items, big beach bags, and driftwood clocks handmade by store owners, Mike and Susan Johnson.  Each clock is constructed with driftwood found on the beach made in a style common to the Keys and Colonial Caribbean.  Each clock ranges in sizes and colors that will fit your style and space.

I hope to see you on Friday, January 31st but if you’re in the neighborhood sooner, the Michelle Nicole Lowe Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday by appointment.  Seaside Glassworks is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  and Islamorada Mercantile is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Holiday Party Planning Simplified

Posted on: December 16th, 2013 by Leah No Comments

The season is upon us for celebrating which means lots of parties, libations and festive food.  If you are hosting a holiday get-together or a soiree to ring in the new year, here are a few tips to help with your party planning.

Decor

By now you’re home is likely already decorated for the holidays but, if not, don’t overdo it before your party.  Your guests are coming to see you and enjoy your company and won’t be spending much time in front of your Christmas tree.  If you’re planning to serve a sit down dinner, spend your energy decorating the table with a few festive items.  A small topiary or rosemary tree looks great strung with lights and placed on your table or outside your front door.  Many of our local nurseries carry these trees this time of year.  I recently bought one at The Banyan Tree at 81197 Overseas Highway in Islamorada and had it potted for under $100.

Festive Drinks

The drinks served at your soiree are as important as the food.  The rule of thumb when considering what to purchase is 50% will drink wine, 30% will drink beer and 20% will drink mixed drinks.  You can simplify your bar by only serving beer and wine, or instead of a full bar,  offer a signature drink such as eggnog or pomegranate martinis.  Not only are signature drinks more festive but they’ll also save you money so that you’re not having to purchase a full bar of liquors and mixers that may not be used.  And for your New Year’s Eve festivities don’t forget the champagne.  There is nothing more fabulous than ringing in the New Year with some bubbly.   For something different, offer a DIY champagne bar with fruit juices including orange and pomegranate and fresh fruit such as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries.

The best time to buy your holiday party libations is during sales.  Most local liquor stores offer one day a week with discounts up to 30% on everything in the store.  On Tuesdays, stock up for your holiday soiree at the Green Turtle Wine & Spirits at 81219 Overseas Highway in Islamorada for a great discount.

Create a menu and Make a list

When deciding on the menu for your holiday party, be sure to make a very good list of all the ingredients you’ll need and preparation times needed for each recipe.  Many recipes can be made ahead of time and refrigerated overnight to save you on preparation time the day of the party.  There is nothing worse than starting to cook only to realize you forgot to buy half the ingredients and a good list prior to shopping will ensure this doesn’t happen to you.  Consider a non-traditional menu for your gathering with a Florida Keys themed menu including shrimp, lobster, crab claws and sushi.  Also, hosting a party at a non-traditional time such as brunch can be a lot of fun.  A lobster frittata and mimosa bar will provide more than enough to satiate your guests.

Simplify your party planning

Simplify your hosting responsibilities by getting a little help from a caterer.  Hiring a bartender or server  can make all the difference between you enjoying or working at your party.  They will ensure all your guests are served and will also help you clean up after the last guests have left.  Consider also having a caterer provide all the food for your event.  The holidays are already busy and stressful,  and parties should be fun.  Megan Hylton, the catering manager with Catering by Green Turtle and Kaiyo Grill is an expert at planning amazing events your guests will remember.  She’ll help you come up with a theme, create a mouth watering menu and will make sure you and your guests have a fabulous time.  Contact Megan by phone 305.393.6215 or email meganh@greenturtleinn.com for more information.
