2015 Pantone Color of the Year

Posted on: February 23rd, 2015 by Leah No Comments

Since 1990, the Pantone Color Institute has selected a color of the year which influences the design world for the year to come. In the past few years, we saw top colors such as emerald, tangerine, honeysuckle, and turquoise. The global color authority announced that their 2015 color of year will be Marsala. A hue they describe as the color of fine chocolates, exotic spices, and the fragrant loam of the fertile Earth. Below are a few ways to incorporate this beautiful hue into your life.

For the Home

This rich earthy wine red hue is a seductive shade that exudes warmth and comfort in its surroundings. Thus, when incorporating this color into your home, Pantone recommends it be considered for textured surfaces such as rugs and furniture. Both hearty and nurturing, Marsala is also a great color to accent in the kitchen and dining areas.

This full-bodied color is strong enough to be used alone as a statement color, or as an accent to other complementary colors like blues, greens, off-whites and browns. Try this color in your home by adding a rug, throw pillows, or by painting one accent wall for a vibrant yet soothing effect.

Versatility is Marsala’s best shade. Unlike past Pantone colors, Marsala has been seen in more variations in fashion and cosmetics. From shades of earthy browns to rich nudes with hues of pink.

Marsala is a color that looks great on all skin tones making it easy to wear.   Embrace this hue by adding a pop of color to your nails, lips or eyes. The trend in makeup is to use an unusual color on your eyelids. Apply this rich color on the corner of your eyelids or as eyeliner for a dramatic look.

Equally appealing to men and women, Marsala is a the perfect shade for apparel and accessories.   Marsala was a big color in the Spring 2015 runway fashion shows and works well for every season. This winter, it was prominent in big cozy sweaters and rich leather bags. For spring and summer look for it in prints.

As an accent, try pairing the color with neutrals like warm taupes and grays, or brights like yellow, teal, and orange. This shade also looks gorgeous with other earth tones such as copper, black, brown, and metallics. Incorporate this into your existing wardrobe by trying it as an accessory color such as heels or a big necklace for a dramatic, on-trend ensemble.

Rules are Meant to be Broken

Posted on: July 11th, 2014 by Leah No Comments

In today’s ever changing world of fashion, it’s important not to take any fashion rules too seriously. Each year, designers emerge with new collections that challenge what we’ve been told we should and shouldn’t do. So instead of following those old adages, challenge yourself to break a few fashion rules this year and evolve your own personal style. As Alexander McQueen put it, “It’s a new era in fashion – there are no rules.”

No white after Labor Day
High-end fashion labels have been breaking this rule for years. In a tropical climate, it’s even more imperative that you embrace the white-in-winter trend. With such bright surroundings we can wear bright apparel all year long. So this year, keep your white jeans and shoes in your closet well after labor day for a fresh look in the cooler months in the Florida Keys. This rule also goes for pastels, there is no reason to reserve light pinks, blues and yellows only for spring and summer!

Sneakers are only for the gym
Bright colored fashion sneakers are being paired with dressier pieces for a modern twist on a daytime look. Look for fashion sneakers that aren’t meant for running or intense training but still offer support such as Keds or Toms. Playful prints such as polka dots or stripes add an element of surprise and offer a comfortable alternative to flip flops for a chic yet comfortable look.

Remove one accessory before leaving the house
Coco Chanel once said that before leaving the house you should remove one accessory. And yet, the infamous fashion icon, Iris Apfel, has done the opposite. Iris is known for piling on her jewelry and has become a fashion muse in her nineties for her eccentric and identifiable style. So next time you’re getting all dolled up, try piling on the bling.

Iris Apfel

Don’t mix prints or pair bright colors together
Contrasting patterns can look fabulous together. Try pairing florals and stripes or polka dots and plaid. The trick is to keep the base color the same for a pulled together look. In addition, don’t shy away from bright colors paired together like red and pink. A red skirt paired with a pastel pink top can look very modern and eye-catching.

For evening only
Bold lipstick and clutches were once reserved for evening only. Lipstick colors such as orange, pink, red and plum can act as an accessory and look great for day. If you wear a bold lip for day, keep your makeup minimal for a polished look. Clutches are also a great way to liven up your daytime look. Swap out your go-to bag for a clutch to change a normal day look into something much more fashionable.

At the end of the day, wear what makes you feel good. If you feel good, you’ll look good. At DK’s Style Hut in Marathon, you’ll find an eclectic mix of fashion forward clothing and accessories to help you break all the rules. Open daily from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. you’ll find this little store is jam packed with great basics including affordable jeans and tanks, and trendy fashion forward apparel including comfy palazzo pants in colorful patterns and hues. My favorite find from this hip and stylish boutique is their Kitty Ammos Sandals from Skiathos Greece made exclusively for DK’s Style Hut. Stop by their location at 8347 Overseas Highway in Marathon to view their impressive range of goods from all over the world.

Arm Candy

Posted on: June 13th, 2014 by Leah No Comments

I got THE call. The call was from my friend letting me know her new bundle of joy had arrived. That bundle… was a Birkin. I was as excited as I would have been had she told me she was delivering her first child.   We promptly named her red beauty, ‘Scarlet’.

Birkin’s are the holy grail of handbags. Handmade by Hermes of materials including crocodile, ostrich and diamond studded leather, these IT bags are produced in limited quantities that create an exclusivity for owners. Birkin’s are a status symbol few will have the privilege of knowing. Celebrities such as Victoria Beckham supposedly own over 100 Birkins worth more than $2 Million.

Birkins are not within the realm of possibility for most of us but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t own a great bag. There are four things that every woman should splurge on: a great hair cut, a classic watch, quality shoes, and a beautiful bag. These are things that are worn daily and can transform a simple look into a fabulous outfit. If you invest wisely in these four pieces, your outfits will always look chic no matter what you’re wearing.

Everyone’s splurge level is different. Some people can afford several thousand dollars for an It bag, while others may only have $100 to spend. Regardless of your budget, your money will go further if you are smart about how you spend it. Shop consignment stores and online discount stores for greatly discounted designer bags.   Sales are another way to spend less for a beautiful bag.

When shopping for a new bag, make sure that it can hold MILK – money, identification, lipstick and keys. In addition, it should also be able to fit your cell phone. If the bag is too small to carry these items, then don’t buy it. A bag this small isn’t functional and therefore won’t get worn.

There are four essential handbags no wardrobe should be without:

– Oversized Tote – Choose a durable fabric that can be used for both work and travel. Choose a style with minimal hardware that can hold both your computer and a few personal items.

– Black Clutch – this is a wardrobe staple that can worn for casual occasions and evening ware. A simple black clutch will always be in style and will be worn for decades.

– Classic Handbag – choose a simple and sturdy silhouette in a neutral hue such as tan, brown, black, or navy. This is your everyday bag that can be worn with every outfit. I would also argue that deep burgandy, red, or snakeskin bags are great neutrals that can be worn for everyday and double as statement bags.

– Statement Clutch – you need one outfit maker clutch in a bright color. This is the bag that transforms a simple look to fabulous.

Christina’s Boutique located at 10990 Overseas Highway in Marathon has expanded their selection of woman’s apparel and accessories to include consignment items. Their large selection of handbags will provide you with plenty of arm candy to choose from and will help you in finding several essential bags to cross off your list.

“Of course, every woman should have at least one over-the-top bag. To really experience life, you need to flirt with extremes. A life lived safely in monotone is not a life lived at all.” – Frank Zambrelli, handbag and accessories designer extraordinaire.

Go bright, bold and beautiful for your next arm candy!

Rejuvenate Your Workout

Posted on: September 20th, 2013 by Leah No Comments

Just like your wardrobe, workout routines can start to feel a little old and bland. And there is nothing worse than dreading it or making it a chore. Rejuvenate your workout by trying something new, getting back into something you love or by adding something shiny and new to your athletic apparel wardrobe.

Stand-up paddleboarding (a.k.a SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. If you have not yet tried this fun pastime, it’s time to change that. Not only is it a great way to explore the shallow water in the Florida Keys but it also provides a great workout. SUP boards offer a wide platform for stability, excellent for standing or kneeling. If you do fall in, the boards are very easy to climb back on. You could also try a paddleboard yoga class offered throughout the Keys. The classes start with a nice paddle then move into a yoga instructed class and then end with a paddle back to land. Start by renting a board and then try out a class on the board. SUP rentals are available in the following locations: Key Largo Paddle the Florida Keys www.paddlethefloridakeys.com (305) 434-5930, Islamorada – MM88 flkeyssup@gmail.com(305) 753-1150, Islamorada Otherside Board Sports www.othersideboardsports.com (305) 853-9728, Keys Kayak in Marathon www.keyskayakllc.com (305) 743-8880, and SUP Key West www.supkeywest.com (305) 240-1426.

If you’d like to keep your workout on dry land, consider taking up an old hobby you used to enjoy. As kids, most of us grew up on our bikes and used it as our main means of transportation. In the Keys, bikes are an excellent way to get around while also providing some great exercise. The trick to this sport as an adult is to invest in a quality bike that is the right size and style for you. Backcountry Cowboy Outfitters in Islamorada not only has a great selection of bicycles for purchase but also has an abundance of Electra bicycles for rent. Stop in and check out their large inventory and rent one to try it out. I highly recommend investing in a basket for the front of your bike. It’s a great way to store water bottles, wallets, and sunscreen while out cruising the Keys. Backcountry Cowboy Outfitters is located in Islamorada at 82240 Overseas Highway (305) 517-4177. Just because you’re going to the gym doesn’t mean you should leave your fashion sense at home.

If you’re wearing old ratty t-shirts to work out, you are in desperate need of a new athletic apparel wardrobe. Workout apparel has come a long way. Workout tops for women offer built-in bra support and strategic color blocking for figure flattering effects. As exciting as it can be to put on a new dress, a new outfit for the gym can provide just as much enjoyment. Flex your fashion muscles by buying color coordinating outfits in bright hues. Make sure that whatever you buy, you feel confident in as that can be another incentive to work up a sweat. Islamorada Fitness at 85960 Overseas Highway offers a nice selection of workout apparel that will make you feel as good as you look.

Conch Style: Defining the Keys Casual Dress Code

Posted on: November 15th, 2012 by Leah No Comments

The majority of the events in the Florida Keys all have one thing in common, the Keys Casual dress code.  By definition, the Keys are casual, laidback, and known for their “anything goes” type of attitude.  So what does this mean when it comes to what to wear to an event ?

Women seem to have this dress code figured out.  At “Keys Casual” events, you will typically see women wearing dresses or skirts with wedges or sandals.  Not only does this work for the warm climate but a dress can dressed up or down for the occasion by simply pairing it with the right accessories.  Worn with sandals and a light-weight scarf, your look will be more casual.  Pair that same dress with wedges or heels and a clutch, and the same dress will look more formal.  For women, dresses and skirts are really the perfect piece of clothing for the Florida Keys.

This dress code really gets interesting when it comes to men.  Typically you will see them in everything from cargo shorts and flip flops to slacks with a jacket.  This creates quite a range of looks on the spectrum of “Keys Casual”.

Keys Casual should really be defined as: “If you’d wear it fishing, don’t wear it to our event.”

Let’s start with the shoes.  There are really only two appropriate shoes to wear in the Keys for a “Keys Casual” event: a leather sandal or a loafer.  Leather makes both look more refined and sophisticated while still being comfortable.   It’s also important to think about the venue for your event, will it be held on a beach?  In the Park?  At a tiki bar?  Both of these shoes will still easily navigate the landscapes of many venues for Florida Keys events.  Reserve your dress shoes for a more formal occasion like dinner out in Miami.

Flat front shorts or pants are always going to be more stylish than a pleated front.  Pleated front pants and shorts scream old man.  If you’re still wearing this style, upgrade to flat front.  Wear slacks in more casual hues such as kahki, gray or even a color like blue or salmon.  Although you really can never go wrong with black, if you are going to wear black pants to a Keys Casual event, make sure you are wearing a more casual shirt such as a polo so that  you aren’t over dressed.

Acceptable shirts for the Keys Casual dress code consist of short sleeve polos, short sleeved collared button down dress shirts and Oxford long-sleeved, collared button down shirts.  Short-sleeve button down shirts made by Tommy Bahama are the perfect Keys Casual look and are easy to come by in the Keys.  But don’t confuse this with Hawaiian shirts.  Hawaiian shirts should really only be worn if you either a. live in Hawaii, b. are attending the Good Health Clinic’s Annual Luau fundraiser, or c. work at a tiki bar.  Instead, wear shirts that are going to be more complimentary on you.   My father once gave me the advice that it’s better to be noticed than noticeable.  Big red flowers covering every square inch of your shirt are noticeable.  Instead, try a shirt in black or white hues.  Both hues will always look dressier, more stylish and more current than shirts covered in prints.

The great thing about shopping for a Keys Casual look for men is that most of the places you already frequent for all your boating and fishing supplies already carry a good assortment of “Keys Casual” shorts, slacks, polos and button down shirts.  Take a look at a few below the next time you need some clothes for an event.

Florida Keys Conch Style: The Key to a Fashionable Wardrobe

Posted on: July 27th, 2012 by Leah No Comments

In the Florida Keys, it can be difficult to be stylish.  The heat and high humidity are not complimentary to getting dressed up. And our testosterone- infused pastimes don’t exactly inspire creativity in fashion.  It isn’t out of the ordinary to spend an afternoon at a community event, take a boat ride to enjoy the sunset and then end up at a restaurant for dinner and drinks.

The secret to a fashionable Keys wardrobe is versatility, owning great basics, buying colorful on-trend accessories and finding comfortable, yet stylish shoes.

Living an active lifestyle means being ready for anything so your Florida Keys wardrobe needs to have versatility.  Not only do we want to look stylish, but we also need to be able to get in and out of a boat without a problem.

Look for pieces that can be dressed up or down – taking you from the boat as a bathing suit cover-up, out to dinner with friends.

Investing in great basics is the foundation to any stylish wardrobe.  Look for pieces that fit and flatter your body.  Wardrobe basics should include fitted shorts, a few colorful fitted shirts, a long maxi dress, two to three colorful jersey dresses, a fitted jacket in a neutral color (such as tan, black or navy), a nice black dress and a great pair of jeans.

Next, add colorful, on-trend accessories such as scarves, jewelry and bags.   This season’s hottest fashion trends include:

  • Embrace neon.  Neon and bright colored pieces such as pink, orange, and yellow are in this season.  Don’t be afraid of color: wear a pink dress with a bright yellow scarf.  When shopping, look for bright colored accessories to add to the great basics you already own.
  • Color-block your look.  Create this by pairing two complementary colors such as yellow and purple or blue and orange.  You can do this by adding a jacket or handbag to your outfit in a color on the opposite side of the color wheel, or be bold and wear a red top with a yellow skirt.
  • Wear contrasting patterns together.  As long as the base color of the two patterns is the same, go for it.  Think long navy striped maxi dress paired with a navy floral scarf.
  • Pair colorful accessories such as a bright bag, statement necklaces and sandals with neutral shorts and top or a black dress.

In addition, here in the Keys comfortable shoes are a must.  Try wedges for a more dressed-up look and lots of bright colored sandals and flip-flips.  Look for a few neutral-colored shoes and then buy lots of color as shoes are a great way to add color to your outfit!

Check out the following affordable Keys boutiques for creating your fashionable Florida Keys wardrobe:
